Saif Ali Khan plays safe

It was a working Eid for Saif Ali Khan who is back on the sets of Akshat Verma’s comedy crime thriller, the tentatively titled Kalagandi, after a minor surgery on June 30, and has been plodding through 12-hour shoots. On Thursday too, the Nawab was filming on Bandra’s Carter Road.

After the exit of a leading production house, actress Anushka Sharma had announced that she would be producing the film under her home banner. Then the film was backed by Bombay Talkies maker Ashi Dua, and now, Saif is on board as a partner-presenter-producer.

The film is a dark, quirky, adult entertainer with three plots running simultaneously through the course of one night. Several actors from Arjun Kapoor to Ayushmann Khurrana had turned down the film because of its bold subject, stating that it was too big a risk. Eventually Saif stepped on board.

His character is the protagonist with Akshay Oberoi as his younger brother. NH10 actor Neil Bhoopalam has a crucial special appearance and will be in a disguise throughout.

There are some graphic intimate moments and scenes with explicit content. “Saif was extremely excited about the film initially and now wants to play it safe and has asked the makers to tone down the content a notch to avoid censor problems. He also believes it needs a new title and the film could be renamed Kala Kanti. A final call is yet to be taken,” informs a source close to the development.
