Saif Ali Khan’s Bunty Aur Babli 2 to resume shoot with a huge song and dance

If you were an actor right now, would you want to return to the camera with a huge-canvas song-and-dance sequence featuring 200 chorus dancers? That’s what the lead actors Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerji are in for when they return to the shooting of Bunty Aur Babli 2 at the start of August.

Sources inform that producer Aditya Chopra has planned an elaborate choreographic confection with profusion of chorus dancers. And Saif and Rani are not okay with that. Informs a source, “They’ve already expressed their unhappiness with being put in such a heavy crowd during these times of corona contagion. Of course Aditya Chopra will be taking every possible precaution. But Saif and Rani would rather have the song situation scaled down, since scrapping it is not possible, as it comes at an essential juncture in the story.”

Since the heroine of Bunty Aur Babli 2 also happens to be the producer’s wife, convincing Aditya Chopra to change the choreographic scale should not be difficult.

He was in Jaipur for the shooting of the 2007 action-thriller Eklavya: The Royal Guard. Producer-director Vidhu Vinod Chopra had put him up at the Trident Hotel, but Saif Ali Khan slipped off to the Rambagh Palace and was sitting on the lawn, feeling like a movie star, when his mother, Sharmila Tagore, called. In the course of the conversation, she told him that he should do Shakespeare. “Maybe Othello,” she suggested.

By a happy coincidence, the next day, Vishal Bhardwaj approached him for Omkara, his Indianised adaptation of Othello. “I jumped at the chance, telling him my mother wanted me to play Othello,” the actor reminisces 14 years later, adding that the filmmaker admitted then that he actually wanted him for Iago aka Ishwar ‘Langda’ Tyagi. In response to Saif’s “Why not Othello?” Vishal pointed out that he was handsome while the Moor had been complexed about his looks, so he wouldn’t suit the part. “He was bluffing, but he did it well,” laughs Saif. The film opened on July 28, 2006, and made Langda Tyagi iconic.

Five months after their last Abu Dhabi schedule, Siddhant Chaturvedi to reunite with Saif Ali Khan-Rani Mukerjee for the final stint of Bunty Aur Babli 2.

Siddhant Chaturvedi had completed filming a major chunk of Bunty Aur Babli 2 in March before the lockdown was announced. Now, with a four-month unforeseen break behind him, the actor is gearing up to reunite with Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukerji and Sharvari Wagh for the final schedule of the con caper.

“We will hopefully resume work by August. The Abu Dhabi schedule was the most important where we shot crucial sequences. Now, we have about 10 to 15 days’ shoot remaining. I am certain the makers will take necessary precautions before we go ahead,” says the actor, adding that the producers — keeping the safety of the cast and crew in mind — have decided to conduct the last leg of shoot at the Yash Raj Films studios. On the cards is a dance number featuring the four leads and some talkie portions.

One-film-old Chaturvedi is as elated as he is nervous about sharing screen space with Khan and Mukerji in the Varun V Sharma-directed venture. “You need to get along with your co-stars when working on a comedy because it is important that your comic timing matches theirs. Improvisation plays a key role in such a movie. Since Rani ma’am and Saif are spontaneous actors, I had to work on my skills to be on par with them,” he says.

Saif Ali Khan has played the sidekick who’s there to boost the hero’s machismo. He has also played the uber cool urban boy who flaunts his ‘Tom Cruise look’. However, despite being the commercial big ticket hero, Saif has often picked niche projects and given some performances that will probably become his legacy one day.

The 2001 film Dil Chahta Hai changed our perception of Saif. With subsequent films like Kal Ho Naa Ho, Hum Tum, Salaam Namaste among others, he became the poster boy of the big-ticket multiplex films. His audience was fixed and knew what to expect from him and just when Saif was starting to enjoy the best phase of his career, he rocked the boat but did not let it sink.

It was around this time that Saif Ali Khan picked up projects like Ek Hasina Thi, Being Cyrus, Omkara and impressed the audience with his diverse movie choices.

Now, you might say that playing Sartaj Singh in Sacred Games brought Saif back to the limelight but in 2006, it was Omkara that awakened us to the actor that Saif was and continues to be.
