Basking in the success of Sacred Games, Saif Ali Khan opens up on censorship and how detractors create controversies to gain mileage

“I wasn’t expecting such an overwhelming response,” smiles Saif Ali Khan, when we congratulate him on the success of Sacred Games. Based on Vikram Chandra’s celebrated novel by the same name, the show has been winning accolades from all and sundry since it dropped online 10 days ago.

Though sold as a platform devoid of the censorship barriers that dominate the movies, the Netflix series, directed by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane, ran into legal trouble last week. A plea was filed in the Delhi High Court seeking to remove certain sections that were allegedly derogatory to former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Saif Ali Khan reveals Sacred Games will have four seasons, Pankaj Tripathi to have central role in second installment

India’s first ever Netflix series Scared Games is receiving raving reviews from critics and audiences worldwide alike. However, some questions are being raised over the ending of the eight-episode series and a sequel may help explain the big cliffhanger.

According to a report, Pankaj Tripathi will have an important role in the second season. A source mentioned “The makers have already planned a second season, the shooting of which will start in November in Mumbai. Pankaj, who appears as Guruji only in three scenes apart from his voiceover in the first season, will have a central role in the second season alongside Nawazuddin as he is the real mastermind.”

The crime-political-terrorism-underworld thriller based on the novel of the same name by Vikram Chandra has been directed by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane. Set in Mumbai, the first season is an adaptation of approximately one-third of the book. Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 100 percent ‘Fresh’ rating.

In an interview, Khan said “Each season will have eight episodes, so overall, the series will have 32 episodes.” There’s no official word from the show’s makers but Saif Ali Khan suggested that filming for a season 2 will begin in September.

Erik Barmack, vice-president of international originals at Netflix said: “India is seeing the biggest and fastest investment in content for any country we have launched in.”

Sacred Games star Saif Ali Khan: It’s liberating for actors to compete internationally

Caught in the whirlwind of promotions, the three lead actors of the latest Netflix series Sacred Games – Radhika Apte, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Saif Ali Khan – seem slightly dazed when we meet them in a suburban hotel in Mumbai. As they ponder over the question regarding their experience of being part of the Mumbai underworld drama based on a book of same name by Vikram Chandra, Apte says, “I have been watching so many amazing shows on Netflix. So, to be in one of them is wonderful. It is exciting that audience in 190 countries will watch it together.” The actor, who plays a RAW agent, looks around and tells her colleagues: “There, I have answered for everybody.”

Khan, who is enjoying his delayed lunch, chips in, “We will be compared to a lot of international shows as well as actors. The cultural requirement and tone for the show are more international. It’s liberating for actors to compete internationally.” Siddiqui expresses his satisfaction over the fact that in a show like this, an actor gets to work on his character in detail.

Saif Ali Khan Shines in Netflix’s ‘Sacred Games’ And Aren’t We Glad to Have Him Back

Posted in Movies with tags , , , , , , , , on July 9, 2018 by saifalikhanonline

The wait is over. Netflix has finally released it’s first Indian original, Sacred Games into the world. Based on Vikram Chandra’s novel by the same name, it is the story of Sartaj Singh (Saif Ali Khan), an honest but jaded police inspector, who receives a tip about crime lord Ganesh Gaitonde’s (Nawazzuddin Siddiqui) return to Mumbai after 15 years. This phone call begins his descent into the dirty world of crime and politics, that is at the core of Sacred Games.

The series is directed by two of the best directors in the country, but has been shot separately – with Vikramaditya Motwane directing Singh’s story, and Anurag Kashyap shooting Gaitonde’s track. The story begins with the tip off to Singh, and then we are told that Singh has 25 days to save his city. From what, from whom and why, we don’t know yet.

Sacred Games Review: Marvellous Performances From Saif Ali Khan And Nawazuddin Siddiqui

Posted in Movies with tags , , , , , , , , , , on July 9, 2018 by saifalikhanonline

Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Radhika Apte, Surveen Chawla

Directors: Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane

Rating: 4 stars (out of 5)

God is repeatedly evoked in Netflix’s Sacred Games. But the interventions of faith in the world that this cops-and-criminals thriller unfolds in are anything but divine. Do you believe in God? That is an oft asked question across the eight episodes of the series. The answer is always ambiguous. So, is there nothing sacred anymore? No, definitely not in the Mumbai underworld, which plays deadly games with the city, and certainly not where religion is a means to befool the masses. The series dives headlong and deep into this dangerous milieu where politicians, policemen, starlets and gangsters are like Shakespeare’s “flies to wanton boys”.

Speaking of Bollywood thrillers, Sacred Games, Netflix’s first Indian original, marks the attainment of adulthood. It does not, in the manner of a pubescent drifter, have to hide his/her desires and actions from prying, disapproving eyes. It is able to give full vent to its own free will. Nothing exemplifies this more eloquently than the extended portrayal in Sacred Games of transgender cabaret dancer Kukoo, who had only limited play in the literary source material (Vikram Chandra’s 2006 novel of the same name)
