Saif Ali Khan has become the first mainstream Indian actor to venture into a digital platform with an original series of Netflix called ‘Sacred Games’. Talking about why he chose to get into digital space, Saif Ali Khan said, “It is the future of movies. We have all kind of bigger films, the so-called mainstream, blockbuster films. I wouldn’t call it niche, but I would call it unpretentious films. I think my acting improved working with some of these actors. It was a really good experience.”

The recent announcement of the screen adaptation of Vikram Chandra’s Sacred Games all set to become the first Netflix original Indian series was greeted with much enthusiasm — and rightly so.

In fact, it is one of the best developments in the field of entertainment in India for a long time. The eight-part series that brings to life one of the most memorable books on Mumbai is being helmed by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane and features Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte.

It could usher in a new era for filmmakers and actors who traditionally could only choose between film and television.

Saif Ali Khan’s web series ‘Sacred Games’ to have four seasons?

Posted in Movies with tags , , , , , on October 31, 2017 by saifalikhanonline

Saif Ali Khan’s Sacred Games has been the object of curiosity ever since it was announced in June this year. After all, it marks video-streaming platform Netflix’s first original series for India, besides seeing directors Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane helming the thriller. While initial buzz suggested that the adaptation of Vikram Chandra’s novel by the same name would be an eight-episode-long finite series, mid-day has learnt that the narrative will be spread over four seasons now.

A source close to production reveals, “The series is based on the novel, but the plot has been developed to suit the visual medium. The makers are now looking at locking in four seasons.”

The source further adds that the eight episodes that are currently being shot in Mumbai will constitute the first season. Most popular web series follow the norm of having the narrative divided over a few seasons. We hear, the officials at Netflix as well as Kashyap and Motwane felt Sacred Games too would benefit from such a format. While retaining the essence of the bestseller, scriptwriters Varun Grover, Smita Singh and Vasant Nath have also added new characters and sub-plots to the series. “It will take time to establish these new characters as well as sub-plots. They will be explored over the course of the seasons.” Officials at Netflix refused to comment.

For a few years now many critics and commentators have talked about the second golden age of television that we seem to be in the midst of. The history of any development, as Siddhartha Mukherjee suggested in The Gene: An Intimate History becomes far more illuminating if told through the transitions than the product itself. In this aspect, Saif Ali Khan perhaps offers a great insight into the journey of a leading man in Hindi films who suddenly loses his audience.

Career

In a career spanning 25 years, Khan has experienced the highs of a traditional Hindi film superstar, the uncertainty of a has-been, the grace of a trusty sidekick and the panache of a parallel or second-lead. As he, in a manner of speaking, becomes the first major mainstream Hindi film star to embrace the online streaming platform, he could very well be scripting a new phase for leading actors who find themselves at the end of the road, as they knew it.
