Netflix India on Friday announced that Sacred Games, the crime drama based on Vikram Chandra’s epic novel, had been renewed for a second season following a hugely popular first batch of eight episodes. While the accompanying teaser video revealed no new footage or lines of dialogue, it did suggest that Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s gangster, Ganesh Gaitonde, would be returning in some capacity.

Details for the hugely anticipated second season, which pick up from where the finale abruptly left off, have been rare. At the end of season one, Inspector Sartaj Singh had stumbled upon a major breakthrough in his investigation of Gaitonde’s claims that Mumbai would imminently be attacked. Gaitonde had given Sartaj 25 days to ‘save his city’ – of which 14 are still remaining.

Sacred Games co-director Vikramaditya Motwane has said actor Saif Ali Khan was the first choice to essay the role of Mumbai Police cop Sartaj Singh in the Netflix Original Series.

Motwane, who co-directed the series with Anurag Kashyap, and screenwriter Varun Grover engaged in an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit India in which the duo were asked a number of questions about the popular show.

One of the Reddit users questioned the mediocrity of Sartaj’s character in the show, in response to which Motwane said “not everyone can or should be a hero from the first frame”.

Saif Ali Khan on Sacred Games: Vikramaditya Motwane may not direct season 2, ‘someone exciting’ to take over

In a surprise revelation, Saif Ali Khan reveals that Vikramaditya Motwane, although an accomplished showrunner, may not be directing the second season of Sacred Games. Someone ‘exciting’ may take over. “Vikram was under a lot of pressure while shooting. That is why I don’t think he enjoyed it. It may be premature to say it right now but he may not be directing the second season,” says Saif Ali Khan, to News18.

Revealing more details about season 2, he says, “It will be fraught with a lot of emotions. I think they are going to bring in his ex-wife now. We have killed most of the characters. Also, there will be a lot of action now, with nuclear blast and everything else in place. And the ‘sacred’ aspect of Sacred Games will be explored more in the second season.”

Sacred Games, Netflix India’s first original, might still be creating ripples with its groundbreaking content but Saif Ali Khan still has that signature air of nonchalance around him despite giving one of his career’s best performance as Sartaj Singh in it. In an interview, the actor, whose last few films failed to leave a mark at the box office, opens up on choosing to do the show, why the digital medium is more exciting and what the future holds for him.

Basking in the success of Sacred Games, Saif Ali Khan opens up on censorship and how detractors create controversies to gain mileage

“I wasn’t expecting such an overwhelming response,” smiles Saif Ali Khan, when we congratulate him on the success of Sacred Games. Based on Vikram Chandra’s celebrated novel by the same name, the show has been winning accolades from all and sundry since it dropped online 10 days ago.

Though sold as a platform devoid of the censorship barriers that dominate the movies, the Netflix series, directed by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane, ran into legal trouble last week. A plea was filed in the Delhi High Court seeking to remove certain sections that were allegedly derogatory to former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.

India’s first ever Netflix series Scared Games is receiving raving reviews from critics and audiences worldwide alike. However, some questions are being raised over the ending of the eight-episode series and a sequel may help explain the big cliffhanger.

According to a report, Pankaj Tripathi will have an important role in the second season. A source mentioned “The makers have already planned a second season, the shooting of which will start in November in Mumbai. Pankaj, who appears as Guruji only in three scenes apart from his voiceover in the first season, will have a central role in the second season alongside Nawazuddin as he is the real mastermind.”

The crime-political-terrorism-underworld thriller based on the novel of the same name by Vikram Chandra has been directed by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane. Set in Mumbai, the first season is an adaptation of approximately one-third of the book. Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 100 percent ‘Fresh’ rating.

In an interview, Khan said “Each season will have eight episodes, so overall, the series will have 32 episodes.” There’s no official word from the show’s makers but Saif Ali Khan suggested that filming for a season 2 will begin in September.

Erik Barmack, vice-president of international originals at Netflix said: “India is seeing the biggest and fastest investment in content for any country we have launched in.”

Caught in the whirlwind of promotions, the three lead actors of the latest Netflix series Sacred Games – Radhika Apte, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Saif Ali Khan – seem slightly dazed when we meet them in a suburban hotel in Mumbai. As they ponder over the question regarding their experience of being part of the Mumbai underworld drama based on a book of same name by Vikram Chandra, Apte says, “I have been watching so many amazing shows on Netflix. So, to be in one of them is wonderful. It is exciting that audience in 190 countries will watch it together.” The actor, who plays a RAW agent, looks around and tells her colleagues: “There, I have answered for everybody.”

Khan, who is enjoying his delayed lunch, chips in, “We will be compared to a lot of international shows as well as actors. The cultural requirement and tone for the show are more international. It’s liberating for actors to compete internationally.” Siddiqui expresses his satisfaction over the fact that in a show like this, an actor gets to work on his character in detail.
