The continuing slide in the value of rupee has rocked many a boats in B-town but it is Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet which has suffered the biggest blow.

The period drama starring Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma is Anurag’s most ambitious project till date. The film co-produced by Phantom Films and Fox Star Studios is currently being shot in Sri Lanka and sample this, one of the sets which emulates Mumbai of the 60s costs Rs 26 crore.

With the rupee hitting a new low every day, the film’s budget has gone up by Rs 23 crore and it may get worse. Drop the Bollywood tag: Saif Ali Khan

Saif is excited about the industry’s future, but says serious changes need to be made.

If one looks at the kaleidoscope of luminaries in our history of Indian cinema, one feels admiration and awe at the achievement. I have lived a prince, and all that I have achieved I can honestly credit to the Indian film industry.

We could make a great story from our 100 years of Indian cinema as we’ve had some phenomenal personalities like Guru Dutt, Dev Anand, Shammi Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan. Films like Kaagaz ke phool, Pakeezah, Sholay, Jewel thief, 3 Idiots are my favourites to name a few.

But let’s just not treat the completion of 100 years of Indian cinema as a mere number; we need to introspect because I think we are still a little regressive in our thoughts. Indian cinema, which is celebrating its centenary year, has a unique identity and should rival Hollywood as its eastern equivalent, says actor-producer Saif Ali Khan who does not believe in any attempts to cross over.

“I think we should not try to cross over,” Saif said over phone from Mumbai.

“Our eastern identity is fundamentally different from theirs. We should look at taking our movies from India to the Middle East, or to places like Egypt and Spain as the audience there is suited to our movies, I believe. And we should rival Hollywood as an eastern equivalent, if ‘western’ is what they call themselves,” he added.

Many feel that there is a similarity between ‘Love Aaj Kal’ and forthcoming movie ‘Cocktail’, but co-producer Dinesh Vijan denies it, saying that to ensure that the film has an individual identity; they opted for online medium to introduce it.

“We wanted the film to get its own identity and we went online in a big way. Our trailers went viral. The trailer caught on and the music has done well, which has worked in our favour and the film has promoted itself,” Vijan, who co-owns Illuminati Films with Saif Ali Khan, told IANS.
