Archive for Ekta Kapoor
After several back-to-back flops like Humshakals, Bulett Raja and more recently, Raj and Krishna DK’s Happy Ending, actor Saif Ali Khan has put himself in the `safe’ hands of producer Ekta Kapoor who is strategising his future moves.
The actor-producer who has been signed on for Sujoy Ghosh’s Bollywood adaptation of the Japanese thriller, The Devotion of Suspect X, being produced by Ekta, recently had a meeting with her in the course of which they discussed two more films which will go on floors once he’s finished with the thriller, co-starring Kangana Ranaut and Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
It must be recalled that Saif recently walked out of Reema Kagti’s romantic drama, being bankrolled by his Dil Chahta Hai producers Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar, over several creative and financial differences. Since then, he’s turned down quite a few offers by other filmmakers.
“He’s being extremely selective about the projects that he greenlights. His discussion with Ekta revolved around his career and she’s given him some sharp insights. One of her sug gestions was to do concept driven films that suit his age and justify his talent. He’s done with playing the urban Casanova and is now looking for more serious roles,“ says a source close to the actor.
Saif is currently training in kickboxing for Sujoy’s film in which he has quite a few action sequences. Adds the source, “He’s working hard on his physique too. The film starts in May after which he will shoot Sameer Sharma’s Jugalbandi, the only other film he has given the nod to.“
Did the Queen of Soaps signs the out-of-form Saif for a 3-film deal?
This good actor needs just one hit to put his career back on track. Ekta Kapoor’s adaptation of The Devotion of Suspect X might just be the game changer.
What is heart warming to note is that Balaji’s head honcho has recognised Saif’s talent and signed him for two more films.
Sujoy Ghosh who wields the megaphone for the adaptation has cast Kangana Ranaut opposite Saif.
The actor said last year that he will make some wise decisions this year and make up for all the bad ones.Aarakshan, Bullet Raja, Agent Vinod, Go Goa Gone, Humshakals, Happy Ending…. the list is long. Seems, Saif is keeping his word.
After opting out of filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh’s much-hyped project, Durga Rani Singh, last year, actor Kangana Ranaut is now back to feature in another film helmed by Ghosh, where she will be seen alongside actor Saif Ali Khan. The film is an adaptation of Japanese best-selling novel, The Devotion of Suspect X, written by Keigo Higashino.
Recently, Ekta Kapoor’s production house acquired the rights for the crime mystery, and Kangana is expected to start shooting for the project, this year.
“Devotion of Suspect X is one of the best books and scripts that I have read. I look forward to this new journey with Sujoy and Balaji,” says the 27-year-old.
Confirming the news, Sujoy adds, “Now that we have Saif and Kangana, our acting department is in safe and competent hands. They will fly the film. I can now happily concentrate on the thriller part of the film.”
After three consecutive duds, Saif Ali Khan is apparently being extra careful about signing films.
For most of 2012 and 2013, Saif Ali Khan was on a roll as he delivered several hit films such as Cocktail (2012) and Race (2013). However, the lull began towards the end of 2013, when Bullett Raja (2013) failed to do well. His next two films – Humshakals (2014) and Happy Ending (2014) also did not have a great run at the box office. Around then, Saif face a lot of flak for his choice of films. Now, however, the actor seems to have learnt his lesson.
An insider tells us that Saif is being extra careful about the films he signs next. “He wants to be extra sure of the script and his character before he decides to do any film,” adds the source.
For the Hindi adaptation of the book The Devotion of Suspect X, Sujoy Ghosh has finally put the cast together. After spending a lot of time with Saif Ali Khan discussing the script at length, the two joined forces for this film.
However, the leading lady was not getting finalised for the longest time. Sujoy was in talks with both Deepika Padukone and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan for the role. However, Deepika cited date issues whereas the former Miss World turned it down.
But their loss seems to be Jaqueline Fernandez’s gain. A source tells us that she has now been finalised as the leading lady opposite Saif. The film will be a romantic thriller. The book has already been adapted into Japanese and Korean films respectively. A project in Hollywood is being planned.
Jacqueline and Saif have earlier worked together in Race 2. As for Sujoy, he will be working with Jackie again after Aladin in 2009, in which he had given her a break. Sujoy met her recently and talks have reached the advanced stages. Now we can confirm that Jacqueline has given her nod to the project.
With Happy Ending completing a hattrick of flops for Saif Ali Khan, buzz was that Ekta Kapoor’s adaptation of Japanese bestseller, The Devotion of Suspect X, may not see the light of the day. But, it has learnt that although the budget is being reworked, the project is on track. Confirming this , Tanveer Bookwala, Chief Creative Officer of Balaji, said: “It’ll roll in April.”
Is the studio thinking of replacing Saif? “No, he is very much a part of the project,” he asserted. Countering rumours that director Sujoy Ghosh has been asked to rework the script, Bookwala said: “Sujoy and Pratim D Gupta have written a spectacular script, with Sujoy’s Kahaani co-writer Suresh Nair as the supervisor.” Bookwala is tight-lipped on the identity of the heroine but according to a source close to the development, Jacqueline Fernandez, who has worked with Sujoy in Aladin earlier, is on the verge of being finalised.
The source said: “She’s figuring out her dates while other modalities are being worked out.” This is no dancingaround- the-confers kind of a role. She will play a mother of an eight-year-old who is also the prime suspect in her husband’s murder. Saif will essays the role of her neighbour who is a mathematics professor. Another character, a cop who is also a maths enthusiast – is yet to be cast.
The film will be mostly shot in Kalimpong. Sujoy had done a recee of the hill-station for another project, Durga Rani Singh. After Kangna Ranaut dropped out, that project has been put on the back burner. “The locations he chose then will be seen in this film. Devotion is just the working title. Eventually, they will come up with an apt Hindi one,” the source said.
