Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan, who is all set to star in Netflix’s upcoming original series ‘Sacred Games,’ feels that it is easier to present a story on a web platform.

While present at the launch of the web series, when asked about all the censorship game, Saif noted, “The fact that there is lack of censorship and we will be able to tell our stories in truth is very exciting. I don’t like the idea of too many constraints. So this book is so layered and to be able to present that without having going to 500 institutions and seek permission to express yourself freely is good.”

The actor also quashed all the reports of being part of Kabir Khan’s web series titled ‘The Forgotten Army’ and noted, “Right now the only streaming service I am working with is Netflix.”

With this web show, Anurag [ Kashyap] and I will fulfil all our wishes,” chuckles Nawazuddin Siddiqui, alluding to the platform that’s free from the high- handedness of the Censor Board that the actor and filmmaker encountered during their previous collaboration, Gangs Of Wasseypur. Siddiqui reveals that the director has been roped in to helm the Netflix original adaptation of Sacred Games, based on Vikram Chandra’s bestselling novel by the same name. “ When we make movies, we think about ways to tone down the sexual content. Sacred Games will be uninhibited, because the fear of censorship won’t play on our minds,” he says.

Pointing out that at film festivals, Kashyap is often pulled up by media and critics for limiting the violence in his outings, Siddiqui laments that he fails for words while narrating the pitiful state of artistes in India due to creative curtailing.

The actor admires the likes of Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar-wai, renowned for his digressive imagery, and hopes that with this series, India, too, can put together a masterpiece.

Sacred Games brings the maverick noir filmmaker and his hitmaker protégé together yet again. Rumours suggest that Siddiqui recently dropped by for a look test.

“ It is too early to speak about my role. The screenplay is still under works and we should start rolling by next month. I’m glad that my work will be available to diverse people across > B = countries to enjoy.” Siddiqui will team up with Saif Ali Khan for the first time in this outing. A previous collaboration was on the cards, but it didn’t materialise after the Sujoy Ghosh- directed project failed to kick- off. “ Saif Ali Khan and I will bring out the wicked side of each other, which is also a requirement of the series.” Sacred Games delves into the links between organised crime and politics in India.

It seems the web series for NetFlix to be directed by Vikramaditya Motwane is getting bigger and bigger. We had said in this very column that this web series, Sacred Games, is about a protagonist (Saif Ali Khan) versus an antagonist (Nawazuddin Siddiquie).

Now Motwane is adding more and more known faces to this web series to raise interest levels and widen its reach. Last week, the new additions were two ladies – Radhika Apte and Surveen Chawla.

No prizes for guessing that one lady will be paired with the antagonist and the other with the protagonist. It will be interesting to see who’s paired with whom, isn’t it?

NEWS of Saif Ali Khan playing Inspector Sartaj Singh in one the most definitive books on Mumbai–Vikram Chandra’s `Sacred Games’–is out, and it has us waiting with bated breath. But what’s equally exciting is that the digital series will be directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and Anurag Kashyap.

The two directors and business partners go back a long way.

And, while the other two part ners in the company Madhu Mantena and Vikas Bahl are barely on speaking terms, Motwane and Kashyap have held on thick. We often know a blockbuster even before we see one, and the film could mark the rise of a new phoenix for the two co-directors.

It is indeed a very happy birthday for novelist Vikram Chandra, who turns 56 today. Netflix has announced only a week ago that Saif Ali Khan will play the lead in its original series based on Chandra’s award-winning Sacred Games.

When I met Vikram Chandra earlier this year, he had expressed full faith in the team behind the screen adaptation of his novel. A critically-acclaimed epic delving into Mumbai’s underworld, Sacred Games seems a propitious pick for Netflix.

Chandra spoke fondly of his bestseller. “Sacred Games was about crime. It was based on the SOP of police and went beyond a regular whodunit,” he said.
