After starring in Rangoon and Chef this year which didn’t do well at the box office, Saif Ali Khan has once again stepped up and will star in a very different role in his upcoming film, Kaalakaandi. The film marks the directorial debut of Delhi Belly writer Akshat Verma and stars Khan in a quirky role.

On Wednesday, we had a fun chat with Saif Ali Khan at the trailer launch of his upcoming film Kaalakaandi, the film which was earlier supposed to release on September 8 this year. The release date was pushed as Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had demanded over 72 cuts in the film. The trailer, which released a day ago, has a lot of cuss words with a lot of intimate scenes between the onscreen couples. Talking about the film being stuck at the CBFC, Saif revealed how they were wondering whether they should release the film on a digital platform before sending it to Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT). He said, “They (CBFC) said, at one point that it (the film) had over 60 cuts. We actually thought we should sell it to somebody thinking that maybe it would work better on a different platform. But it’s not cool either because we didn’t make it for that platform. So, Cinestaan guys listened to me and we decided to see what FCAT says. They gave us one replacement and a U/A certificate.”

I play Ayesha. Strong, bold woman of the world who knows what she wants. She’s fun, funny and knows how to have a good time. She believes in living life to the fullest and partying till the sun comes up. She’s a party animal and is the queen of Bombay’s nightlife. She plays ditsy but is very smart and when s**t hits the fan, she’s the one in charge.

How was it working with Saif?

Saif is a sweetheart. Complete gentleman, very easy to hang out with. Engaging, interesting, intelligent and funny. He is someone I would love to be buddies with.

Is it a conscious decision to not be a part of Hindi commercial films or is it because there aren’t enough substantial roles for women out there?

I’ve been working in the US for the past 7 years. I just moved back home 2 weeks ago. I was working on projects there. ‘Brown Nation’, ‘The Nightly Show’ and ‘The Big Sick’ -comedy film which I am sure you’ve all watched. I am back, you will see me a lot more now.
