Vishal Bhardwaj on casting Saif Ali Khan as Langda Tyagi in Omkara

Speaking about Saif’s casting as Langda Tyagi, Bhardwaj spoke about a movie that he was making with Aamir Khan that got shelved. “Actually, I’ve shelved more movies than I’ve made,” he joked. The character of Langda Tyagi was born during a brainstorming session between the filmmaker and Aamir ‘Perfectionist’ Khan.

fter the film got shelved, Aamir said why don’t you make Othello and I will play Langda Tyagi. I didn’t think at that time that a star would be interested in playing the role and that prompted me to think of casting a star. I liked Saif in Dil Chahta Hai and Ek Hasina Thi. I met him and I got the confidence from him that he’ll be able to pull it off.

The director also spoke about the fine balance between artistic movies and commercial success.

If we talk about ‘Beedi Jalaile’, I’ll be very honest with you and say that we wanted it to be the biggest item number of the year. But integrating the item song into the movie and making it realistic was important. Finally, if any one would have gone out for a smoke break or to take a phone call during the song, then they would have missed an essential part of the screenplay. And that’s an art.

Director Raja Krishna Menon is set to serve a blend of food, emotions and travel in Chef

“All we did was eat and in between, we shot a film,” laughs Raja Krishna Menon, over the telephone. The director who is still soaring high with the success of the Akshay Kumar starrer Airlift, is all set to serve up Chef, a movie that has Saif Ali Khan in the lead. A remake of Jon Favereu’s Hollywood film by the same name, Raja says his Bollywood version isn’t a remake of the Favereu movie. Instead, he has adapted the film by adding masala, a blend of food, emotions and travel, to suit the local palate.

Food, says Raja, is the glue that binds people together. “Food, to me, is also not just about flavours and aromas; it’s about memories and emotions,” he adds. And food is explored at its best in the film, be it appam and meen curry from a toddy shop in Kochi or the aloo tikkis from the streets of Chandni Chowk.

Saif Ali Khan discovers his inner chef

Posted in Movies with tags , , , , , , on September 21, 2017 by saifalikhanonline

‘Chef’ director Raja Krishna Menon has dished out details on actor Saif Ali Khan’s new-found cooking skills.

“When we started, Saif was very worried about my expectations from him in terms of being able to chop and cook like a masterchef. During the training that started with the basics and went all the way to plating Michelin star dishes, Saif began to really enjoy cooking,” Menon said in a statement.

From cutting and chopping vegetables and kneading dough to actually rustling up dishes like pastas and Rotzza’s (the main food item sold on the food truck in the film), Saif has managed to do it all.

The actor trained for close to four hours everyday, over a period of a month, with Chef Himanshu and his team at Mumbai’s 5 star hotel.

By the end of it, Saif was able to chop not 50 or 100 but 200 onions and garlics, everyday.

“Cooking has now become a part of who he is today. Saif discovered his inner chef through this film. I was quite content to see his transformation from someone who has never cooked to that of a professional chef,” said Menon.

‘Chef’, produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Vikram Malhotra, Janani Ravichandran and Menon, is slated to release on October 6.
