The film Love Aaj Kal, which released on this day 10 years ago, was a respite from run-of-the-mill romantic films. Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone played two commitment-phobic young and successful professionals who keep changing their relationship status and only begin to understand the relevance of marriage and stability after their break-up.

What also made it unique was the fact that the story ran parallel to actor Rishi Kapoor (his younger self also played by Saif) and his on screen (and off screen) wife Neetu Singh’s (younger self played by actor Giselli Monteiro) love story set in the earlier times.

Bosco talks about Saif Ali Khan’s Chor Baazari from Love Aaj Kal on International Dance Day

What makes this track that particularly special is that we won awards for it when all of it was actually designed on the set. This proved that for good choreography, one need not always have an ensemble of dancers to depend on. Also, it was special because I love working with Imtiaz [Ali, director]. I think, when we work together, we feed on each other’s ideas. If I give him a move, he takes it further and makes it a scene. Similarly, when he paints a scene for me, I find a way to add movement to it.

When we reached Delhi to shoot for the song, we didn’t have a sequence in mind. The movements were all natural and impromptu. It was just the body reacting to the quirky beats at that moment. Saif [Ali Khan] may not be the best dancer, but we shared a rapport after collaborating on Race. He could make any movement his own, always adding his style to it. He allowed things to unfold naturally, and felt the rhythm of the song. That was important. Also, it was a freespirited dance. We were choreographing on the go across the streets of Mumbai and Delhi, and using things like taxis to enhance the sequence. So it was lively. There were also some incidents that scared us.

Deepika [Padukone] could have had an accident that day. If you see the song, there’s a scene where she’s dancing atop a table. While filming, the actors must have missed their cues given the chaos. Saif was meant to hold her when she falls, but he didn’t. Fortunately, Deepika, athletic and focused as she is, managed to save herself. She could have fallen from a height of eight feet that day.

Saif Ali Khan: Love Aaj Kal was a good movie, but nobody breaks up with a girl like that

Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan wants to do characters that are more ‘rounded’ and reflective of society. He says that better films are being made now but the ideal point is still a long way off.

In the 25 years that he has spent in cinema, Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan has played a wide range of characters in various film genres. And today, his assessment is that Bollywood movies fail to reflect Indian society, which is why the films can’t establish a connection with the masses.

“I think a lot of these films aren’t reflective of reality; [and] I think smaller films are. It’s not often that I do a scene, and say, ‘Oh, this reminds me of something that I’ve done before in my real life’. Even the romance is a little different from how it actually is,” says Saif. Citing the example of Love Aaj Kal (2009), Saif, who turned producer with that film, with himself and Deepika Padukone in the lead, explains, “Love Aaj Kal was a good movie, but I don’t break up with a girl like that. Nobody behaves like that.” In the film, the two lead characters mutually decide to break up at a point when they know they’d be living in different countries — they predict that a long-distance relationship wouldn’t work and that there’d be quarrels. And so, they go their separate ways. Just like that.
