Though he has a certain old-world charm, sophistication and royalty; he’s in every way new-age and cool. And this is evident from his choice of work. From attempting films like Kaalakaandi to entering the world of web series, he is known for going the unconventional way. Less of a star and more of an actor, Saif Ali Khan, in a candid chat with Ahmedabad Times, opens up about #MeToo, being a secured father and not worrying about the exposure Taimur gets on social media as a kid.

Hindi films are ever evolving. From being set in plush foreign locations and NRI characters to being based in the small-town India, there has been a huge shift.

It is actually a challenging, and at the same time a very interesting time in Bollywood. Earlier, so many films that I did were all looking at the NRIs, based in the US. They all had a very modern, upmarket look and feel to them. But now our films are looking more towards ourselves, the small-town people and the stories of our lives. And while such kind of films are being made, it is also very challenging to sustain such films because the emotions are different, the audience’s expectations are different. And we will have to see if this is a permanent shift or just a transition period. India is changing and our films are mirroring that change.

In the current age of the paparazzi craze, Saif Ali Khan might be the lesser-known, less visible partner amongst India’s most widely covered married couple and parents. Kareena Kapoor Khan and their son, Taimur Ali Khan Pataudi is often spotted out and about, while Saif is clearly, reticent to be seen or clicked. That, actually, might be a good thing for him.

Audiences today have a whole new generation included. The millennial generation is not invested or influenced by power hierarchies and established star structures of Hindi cinema. So the fact that the three Khans- Aamir, Shah Rukh and Salman- lead Hindi cinema’s star brigade, while Saif was always the lesser star, doesn’t quite matter to them. What might matter instead is that he are the performances and films that work for them?
